Employer's Cookbook case studies & testimonialsThe Consortium was a public sector organisation which underwent a transition to become a competitive private limited company. The journey it went through to achieve such a successful transition was a remarkable one and the lessons learned were of huge value. I am delighted that I played a signifiicant part in helping the organisation to achieve this. To begin with the organisation was stuck in a rut of under investment, poor service, inefficient processes, alienated employees and poor financial performance. Many process changes were made but were largely ineffective and the organisation's very survival was at risk.
However in the nick of time, with guidance from me, the key players in the Company discovered the importance of establishing the right culture in the business - getting the right people doing the right things in the right way at the right time. I helped them to set out the stall to show what was needed for The Consortium Team to provide excellent customer service and grow the business. Those who were not up to the challenge left the organisation and those who were clearly understood what the Company's aims and objectives were and their role in achieving them. With my help the Company introduced a Balanced Business Scorecard (BBS) performance management system whereby everyone's performance is regularly reviewed. The result is not only enhanced performance but also greater motivation, commitment and involvement. I also helped The Consortium to develop and implement an annual Employee Value Management (EVM) process whereby every person in the organisation has their motivation and commitment measured and the issues, both good and bad, which are alive in the organisation are brought out into the open and addressed through team action plans. This virtuous circle of activity secures the commitment of the whole workforce.
I also led the organisation through the adoption and ongoing implementation of job evaluation and salary benchmarking methodology. This really helps to ensure fairness and consistency of treatment of employees across all parts of the organisation as far as pay and benefits are concerned. The result of all this activity has been a transformation to the high service, customer led, professional business you see today. I am extremely proud to have contributed to that success and am confident that any organisation would benefit from engaging in similar activity. Nigel Cook Director Employers Cookbook Testimonial From Consortium Chairman Jeff Gould " In his time with The Consortium Nigel played a leading role as instigator and facilitator of considerable cultural change. His sound professional judgement has been valuable in helping others to deal effectively with their day to day people issues. Building and sustaining the right Company culture is a key competitive advantage and therefore an essential component for every organisation's ongoing success. " Nigel is a natural team player who openly shares original thinking in contributing to strategic discussions. His knowledge of personality profiling helped colleagues to better understand how different people 'tick' thus improving individual and team effectiveness. " He combines an innate intellectual capability with a sound professional CIPD grounding and his operational experience to develop policies and strategies across the spectrum of business issues, which deliver sound business results. " Testimonial Steve Tadhunter - Warehousing & Distribution Manager " When it comes to the subject of 'culture' in business, I am a 'converted sceptic'. In all my previous operational experience I came across many HR initiatives which didn't really impact on the performance of my people or the bottom line. " However, at The Consortium, Nigel and his team, working closely with me and my management team, put in place a range of initiatives which really did make an impact. The benefits have been:- an immediate transformation in staff retention; much higher levels of productivity and quality of work; much greater ownership and commitment from the entire workforce towards process improvement - all of which have established a previously unheard of standard of service to our customers and at a reduced cost too. " It's always difficult to pinpoint the causes of low moral and one initiative we have found particularly useful has been EVM (Employee Value Management). Not only does it help us to understand and deal with all the issues our staff have, but also people feel valued because they've had an input and we have been seen to have followed up on their feedback. It enables my management team to focus on actual rather perceived issues and positive results are achieved much more quickly. An additional unforeseen benefit was that the numerical score improved on each successive survey and everyone has taken great pride in the progress made. " I am confident that any business would benefit from working with Nigel to improve its performance. " EVM Rob Stafford, former Consortium FD & Corporate Turnaround Executive " EVM is the tool you need to measure (anonymously) whether staff are with you. It provides quantitative & qualitative feedback which combined give real insight into your stewardship & the management of individual teams. EVM results were as important to me as customer satisfaction scores. "
